Those were the U.S. Army Band Herald Trumpets. It is an ensemble consisting of trumpeters from my band. Those things are freakin LOUD at any distance less than 100 meters. They got to go to the Super Bowl and play and assume watch the game for free. They also went and played for the G-8 summit I believe. They do a lot of White House work and worked their tails off during inaugural week.
I only watched some of the second quarter and the half-time snoozethon so I missed hearing them.

I was, personally, a little disappointed with the vocal arrangement of the piece. I have heard some pretty phenomenal arrangements of this work for mixed chorus and I think that the folks who were there singing (who are, presumably, very talented if they're singing in the Academy choruses) deserved something more than unison 75% of the time. The herald trumpets were a nice touch though. I wonder if this was the only arrangement that could be found for chorus and trumpets?
It WAS, however, better than a 5 minute pop version.
Then again, there's probably a reason that I'm not arranging for Super Bowl halftime shows....
This year's SSB was certainly better than those at most sporting events.
When it comes to this, I believe simple is better. Many of the soloists these days use it to try to show off instead of simply honoring our country. Sometimes they embellish the melody to the point of it becoming unrecognizable. I liked this year's rendition at the Super Bowl.
...in my opinion, this was 1000000x better than some crappy pop star ruining it with their shitty voice...
This was exactly the same thing I was talking about with my friends while watching it. The last thing I needed was the Backstreet Boys, N'sync, or any other "boy band" screwing up the national anthem.
The Herald Trumpets always sound good. I'm assuming they did not get to stay for the game. To get to see the game would be far too cool, and make too much sense.
The pop-star effect on any piece of music can be staggering. During the last two Christmas seasons, I've been collecting .mp3 files of different renditions of "O Holy Night." It's almost surreal listening to all 17 versions I have, top to bottom. I put them all on one CD, called it "O Holy Hell" and keep it in the car. Great laughs.

I know what you mean. I wonder of good ole P.T. Barnum was thinking of these guys when he made his now famous assessment of the situation.
I certainly enjoyed the singing of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl this year. The harmonizing on some parts was a nice new take on it. Herald trumpets were great too.

I am pretty sure it was CPT Shaw. He is the OIC of Ceremonial Band but like all the officers he does a little of everything. He also just happens to be a decent tuba player.
