Dead horse still being beaten...Sorry.
What do you use when you fly? Why?
Do you use any additional packing materials (packed in the gig bag, beach ball, bubble wrap, clothing etc)?
I have 2 horns I'm flying with, trying to weigh my options.
Nirschl York 6/4CC
Yamaha YFB621
Anyone besides Alan Baer use a double case?
Thanks in advance for all repies.
Wes Krygsman
ps- Anybody got something for sale/rent that would fit either of my horns?

Re: Flight Cases
Hi Wes.
I sold my Unitec (Alan Baer) flight case to Will Ebbels. It was designed for your Nirschl. It's very tough and heavy, but it will protect that great tuba you have. Give him a shout. Maybe he'll loan it to you. Kyle

Did you see his bell at TUSABTEC a couple of years ago?goodgigs wrote:OK, I've posted before that I built my own 20,000 + miles Coffin case, but that it was over size and over weight, soWes Krygsman wrote: .

I can't make a suggestion for the big horn, but as to the Yamaha, I can only tell you ant Jim Self says its factory case
qualifies for regular baggage and He just checks it and forgets it because he has never had ANY DAMMAGE flying with that tuba.
But...that said...I agree that the Yamaha factory case is very good at protecting the tuba. Not so good at protecting itself.

Re: Flight Cases
As I need to get my inventory down, I'm goanna try with only one case
A MTS vault - shell only
I will use the gigbags as internal padding + a little somthing if
it's too roomy for the smaller tubas. I'll probably also 'plugg' the
bell with a scliphf practice mute.
It's really not the best solution as it still alowes the tuba to take the
hit at one spot, unlike a good custom padding that will distribute
it better, but it's good enough for my insurance.

Yes, I figured packing pillows could do the trick.bloke wrote:
Store the case with enough clear plastic air-filled packing pillows to hold your tuba-in-its-bag away from the frame of the case.
Quite strong, light weight and dampens shock very good.
Not surprisingly used to ship tubas

If the bags are hard to find (and I've had them show up uninflated, which worries me sometimes), you can get a similar effect by filling a plastic grocery-store bag with packing peanuts and tying the handles to seal them into the bag.
The last time I received a tuba from a regular tuba store (maybe two or three years ago), it was in a plastic bag and then buried in peanuts. Very good packing (as long as there is at least 5 or 6 inches of peanuts between the tuba and the box at all times), but it made a terrible mess on the other end. I used the same box to ship a similar instrument to a different destination, and I bagged up the peanuts before putting them back into the box. Much neater, and easier to repack.

Re: Flight Cases
It isn't what you asked, but here is what I do. I ALWAYS buy a ticket for Tubas I am flying with. That being said, I never fly with more than one. Even though I am handy with rubbing out dents, buying a ticket for my horn gives me peace of mind and easily off-sets the cost of having it fixed later.
Just my 2 cents...

Re: Flight Cases
One more dent in my bell in stock Yamaha case ...
I still think the case is an OK option for flying. In a flight case the YCB661 would be over the weight limit ...
Time to call the insurance people (again ...)
