FS: Gronitz PF-125 ***SOLD***

Postby Jeff Keller » Sun Apr 22, 2012 12:17 pm

Greetings,

Against my better judgement, I have decided to part with my Gronitz PF-125 F tuba. This is a large 4 piston, 1 rotary custom F tuba made in Hamburg Germany. While being very similar in size to the Yamaha 822, it has a wonderful German F tuba sound, but offers a solid low "yamaha" register without the brightness. The fifth rotor is currently set to the 2-step system (tri-tone extension will be included). 19-20-21mm conical bore, 16.5" bell.

Horn was just cleaned and serviced by Dana Hofer in Chicago. The first slide is trombone slide quality. In fact, I have put 3 slight dings in the bell from the first slide falling out while on its bell. Other than those, there is one other ding in the main tubing (pictures coming soon). Lacquer scores about a 98%. There is normal wear on the first slide's lacquer from the constant contact with the left hand.

Why am I selling? I can't justify having it. I recently used it in a solo performance with the University of Kentucky's Symphony Band. Since that is over, it will just sit in the black leather Reunion Blues gig bag (that is included). I don't use it at work; I hate to sell it, but I can't see keeping it, not using it, and continue to accrue interest on other debt.

Price: $8000
What's included: Horn, Laskey 30C mouthpiece, Tri-tone extension, Leather Reunion Blues gig bag, and CONUS shipping.

Feel free to post any questions you might have. Horn is located in the northern Chicago suburbs.

Thanks,

Jeff

I've heard Jeff play this tuba, and he sounded great! Just like he said, low register was rock solid, and he was able to get many colors from it with little apparent effort. Very nice all-around tuba. This tuba will make someone very happy. Just an added perspective.

Thanks, Chris, for the nice words. As promised, here is a link for photos: http://photobucket.com/jeffsgronitz

Jeff

p.s. I forgot to mention that I will include a Schlipf Mute with it (worth $200+). By far one of the best practice mutes available.

This is a great F tuba, not too big and not too small. Very sad to see Jeff sell this horn as he sounds brilliant on it! I had an opportunity to play it recently, and if in the right financial situation would buy it in a second. Someone is going to get a fabulous F tuba in great condition. It plays as open as a Yamaha 822, while implementing a nice dark sound. Buy it!

Jeff gave a masterclass to the University of Kentucky tuba studio recently and I got a chance to play this tuba; if I didn't have my JBL, I would be buying this yesterday! Awesome sound, awesome low register, with a great color - no "tubbiness" at all, and a response that makes you say "wow!"

Unsolicited bump! Buy Jeff's horn!

I have not played this exact horn, but I own the same model. I looked very close at many models, including the yamaha piston Fs, the Meinl Weston Fs, Willson F, Kantsul F, and the Miraphone 1281, and this horn was my favorite. Lots of richness and color to the sound, and has a very nice f tuba sound.

Intonation on these F tubas are really good...if anything (generally) some notes are a little sharp which is fixed by an easy slide pull.

Very comfortable to play these horns. I can say I finally found an F tuba with the sound and playability I like, without having to sacrifice one or the other.

$8000 for the horn, leather gig bag, and mute...that is a steal...

I used to own this tuba, and it has a luxurious warm sound. It is the best brass quintet tuba that I have owned. Also, Jeff is a great guy.
