My wife and i have an agreement. For every one horn I get she gets two coach purses. A recent tuba ( Eb ) purchase was 100. in great condition just needs a 300 valve job. She held me to the agreement so she now gets two coach purses. When I bought back an Eb cornet made circca 1914 she says. " You sold it so became the property of someone else. Then you bought it back from him, not that you were getting back a previously owned horn. That means 2 more coach purses." I think she is getting the better deal. Also My Mother-in-law LOOOVEs my tuba and really lives the sousy. I did a special concert for her ( she is now 92 as of may 27 and house bound) I put on a tux and play xmas songs on tuba sousy and baritone. SHE LOOOVD IT and will comment about me NOT practicing IE " I didnt heare you practice today how come"

After I got my King Jumbo my wife said: "We are definitely going to have to rearrange stuff if we are going to put that in the living room"

Also, when we dropped it off to Dan for some dent removal, he recommended we get the valves replated...her response "might as well do it now"

Her current comment on having a sousaphone in the corner of our living room: "It just looks so cool sitting there...I really like it"

When I brought my jumbo sousaphone to community band practice for fun...she said "wow that thing was loud....that was awesome"

....and finally....a few years ago when I bought my King....my first real horn, I got a great deal on it from a friend who worked at Conn-Selmer...she said "Well if you want to get a nice horn...you better buy it.....and yes get the silver one....and a case"......she brought it home for me from Indiana and said....can you help me get some more groceries out of the car....I have a case of the KING of beers in the back seat.

BTW.....she does have a sister.....Amy takers?

My wife has begun writing her memoirs as the wife of a tuba player and will be posted to Tubenet in the near future under a different topic. I hope it will entertain you as much as it seemed to entertain our principal oboist and third horn player at the orchestra party several years ago. They seemed to be QUITE amused.

I forgot another tuba related one my wife said. "How about I just bring you the beer."

The story is: right after we moved into our handy man special of a house, one of the very first rooms Cathy painted and decorated was "The Tuba Room". Basically it is our TV room with reclining sofa, stereo system, book shelves stocked with books, and 4-5 tubas displayed in there. So... one day with Johnsonville Brats on the grill out back, a tuba playing visitor was taking the tour of my never ending project called a house and in "The Tuba Room" he comments, "This room has everything but a fridge stocked with beer." My wife overheard, stuck her head in the room and said, "How about I just bring you the beer." He then mumbled something like "you suck".
Beer, Brats, Tubas and a good Spouse!!

So my sousaphone had to go, leaving me with just a 4/4 EEb, a 3/4 Eb , and a 3/4 BBb.
Shame really, if the case hadn't had a hump on it for the bell connector I might have got away with disguising it as a coffee table - I tried suggesting that the hump under the table cloth made for interesting presentation of chips and salsa, but I guess that was one step too far.

The tubarium is a storage rack made of slotted angle and floorboards, and holds my tubas. It used to stand conveniently in the corner of the living room, but 3 moves later we have a basement...

I can't think of anything specific, but basically, if I can come up with a way to pay for something (aka, sell stuff on ebay, work an odd job here and there) I can buy stuff for my tuba. That's how I got an upright bell and a new mouthpiece. I'm working on putting together my dent magnet and ball set right now. She's very supportive of my tuba-ing! (and she's an amazing cook!!!)
