Since I've spent minimal time in Chicago, and never without a car, someone please answer this for me:

What's the walk like from Orchestra Hall to Union Station? I've found all the CTA routes I need, but I do enjoy walking no matter what. Unless it's not safe, of course.

I'd be walking after the concert 5/16, so it would be about 8pm or so. It's very cool....MegaBus from St Louis leaves here at 830am, gets up there about 1, leaves again at 1130pm. Time to haunt Navy Pier or a museum in the afternoon...and, the fare at this point is $13 each way! So, transport, CSO ticket, CTA fares, parking, meals...under $125 for the day. Not a bad deal.

But, how is that walk, at or near dark????

Or, if anyone who is going wants to hang for a day, and I will purchase appropriate beverages...

With the concert ending around 8-8:30, you'll have plenty of time for a late dinner across from Orchestra Hall at the Exchequer, a former 'speak-easy' and favorite of Al Capone. You could also hit up Miller's Pub (also on Wabash just behind Symphony Center)

From there, its an easy walk straight down Adams or a cheap cab ride to Union Station.

I walk that path to work (my store is in the Fine Arts Building, 2 blocks south of Symphony Center). Even with my short legs, it takes only 20-25 minutes; a bit longer when there is a tuba on my back.

Noticed this in FOR SALE - tickets available!!!

Yes 20 minutes would cover the walk from Symphony Center to Union Station - that is about what it took me with my two artificial knees at peak hour.

I think I would grab a cab - not keen on people wanting handouts in the dark.......

Now, IF i just had a few grand to spare I'd be on a plane for thhis, oh well.....

Must see if WFMY is going to broadcast this concert. Hope Gene gets it recorded somehow - maybe CSO Resound will make it available.

While everyone's eyebrows, both musical and metaphorical, may be raised by Pokorny's choice of a Contrabass tuba for the VW, those of us of a certain age not only learned, but performed the work on NOTHING but a contrabass (although I for one probably never approached the magnificence I'm sure he displayed). An F tuba was one of those things everyone talked about, but no one ever saw nor played when I was coming up. Goes to show how far things have come from my day. I started playing tuba in 1972, didn't PLAY my first F Tuba until 1988, and didn't own one until 2000. My how time has flown.
