Hard Case Miraphone 1293

Post by noahthemok »

Quick question, is there a hard case by MTS that fits a Miraphone 1293?

Thanks

I'm more familiar with the SKB385W case, but I believe the inside dimensions are almost identical to the medium sized MTS1207V. Both of these cases are a very tight fit for the Miraphone 1291/1292. For a good fit in the SKB, lately I've been tearing out the bottom bow pad in the case, cutting about 1" out of it, then regluing the fabric over it. You can squeeze the 1291/1292 tubas into the case without this modification, but it's very tight.

The problem with the 1293 is that its bigger bell is not only a larger diameter, but it makes the tuba about 1" longer than the 1291/1292. You'll definitely have to customize the bottom bow end of the case if the MTS 1207 is still the same as the SKB385W.

The larger case available from both companies, the SKB390W and MTS 1209V, are both really too long for this tuba, and you'll have an overly bulky case with lots of room inside. The large case is a better fit for 40" tubas like the 186, MW 25, Yamaha 641, etc. I think the 1293 is about 37" long.

Though the SKB cases are a bit cheaper, the advantage of the MTS, besides being made in the USA, is that MTS can offer several different interior pad shapes for each shell. I believe that's what makes their 5/4 cases special - same shell, different interior. I'm not sure if MTS still offers custom interiors, but with a little elbow grease, you can do it yourself.

For modifying these cases, I tear things apart with a box cutting knife, cut the foam with a serrated letter opener, and put it all back together with some spray adhesive from an art store. Matching interior fabric and extra foam pieces can be found at any fabric store if you need it.

The US distributor of MTS is American Way Marketing/B&S USA, in Elkart, IN. They may have more info on MTS options.

Go with the J. Winter 995 for the Miraphone 1293: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/brass-in ... -tuba-case" target="_blank

It is a much better case and fits the instrument very well. Be sure to use the coupon to get the discount from Musicians Friend.

MTS has a very helpful website and it is easy to figure out which case would fit. I used one an a recent trip to China and the horn survived just fine and so did the case. When I came back I went to the plant for a little more custom fitting which they did for free. Really nice people with a solid product.
