Who am I?

Post by tubajon »

16.5 inch bell. 43 inch height. Key of BBb. 4 rotary valves with 15/16 inch main tuning slide. Some say I'm Czech; others say I'm East German. I'm kind of old. I look like a B&S. Correct answer is worth $1.00.

For repair, or is it gonna be for sale soon?

The Karl Wunderlick pictured was sold several years ago. The picture was just handy.

However.... The one here are the moment is a B & S/VMI 101 stenciled 'Walter Kroner'. It's here just for some simple dent removal... nothing serious... and is in VERY good condition. It has it's original bell (with a garland) that's also in very good condition. And yes... the 'Walter Kroner' will be for sale shortly. The price is not yet established since I don't own the horn... just doing the repair work. The owner is a poster here and may chime in on this thread.

Thanks for the info. I missed out on that Wunderlick a few years back when I couldn't get approval from my spouse/family CFO . . .

Geez....yet another B&S/VMI stencil :!: Lets see, we have: 'Musica', 'Sonora', 'Karl Zeiss', 'Gerhard Schneider', 'Carl Wunderlich', 'Giardinelli', 'Weltklang', 'Sanders', 'Walter Kroner' and counting...

The stencils 'Musica', 'Karl Zeiss' and 'Sanders' were also made by Cerveny, so it can be confusing. Other Cerveny/Amati stencils were 'Walter Sear' and 'Lignatone' and probably others...

Seems that B&S and Cerveny are tops for stenciling tubas under different names.

edit: hard to keep track of all these stencils

Weltklang was the student/amateur line from GDR-era B&S,

Sonora and Musica are so common terms that they cannot be trademarked and hence may be used by anybody.

Lignatone was one of the housebrands of Amati also used for rotary instruments out of the then separately located Cerveny factory.

I am not sure about Karl Zeiss and Gerhard Schneider, but they may have been independent master craftsmen like Carl Wunderlich of Siebenbrunnen, a village now a part of Markneukirchen. All independent masters were forced into state conglomerates. Some continued as leaders of in-house workshops/brands like Hans Hoyer, the Wolframs, and Scherzer. Others had their names used as brands whenever exclusive importer contracts were broken.
