Guitar Center does not, however, they do own Woodwind and Brasswind, as well as Musician's Friend. So while they do not directly sell tubas, their subsidiaries do.

I believe Joe's point is that between the poor rating S&P gave Guitar Center Holdings (the parent company) they may try to increase liquidity by selling off some of their more expensive, slower moving assets; i.e. tubas.

As a former owner, in the 1990's, of a brass pro shop in Baltimore, Maryland, I depended heavily on the consignment sales of French horns. Toward the end of the decade, I noticed that requests for my consignment services were beginning to reduce in number. This occurred at about the time when Ebay was becoming popular and people realized that they could easily sell their own used instruments. It was, at this time, I got an offer from someone that wanted to buy my business. I accepted the offer and have never looked back. The internet sales capability is destroying the walk-in retail sales business. I have bought and sold things on Ebay. But, I would rather walk into a store, see and touch the product I am about to buy and have a knowledgeable sales person to answer any questions that I may have.

Isn't Guitar Center owned by Bain Capital? I just wonder what influence they have.

except your re-mark.

stereotypical leftists - hate Bain Capital - because they're "supposed to"
stereotypical leftists - post memes on facebook and elsewhere about supporting "mom and pop" businesses instead of "big corporation" businesses...

...so which stereotypical leftist stance is being supported via your re-mark here?

I was actually curious if Bain Capital's rating would effect the recovery ability of guitar center, or are they consider completely separate entities. If they are rated as individual companies, does their association have any impact?

No. when Bain borrows, it does so on the Guitar Center Holdings tab. It minimizes their risk. That said given all that's happened with S&P and Moody's failures over the past five years to recognize the inherent issues in certain financial instruments, there are many who consider them a joke at this point.

Also, while Bain has been known to step away, Guitar Center isn't going anywhere.

No, it is apparently not owned by Bain Capital. It is listed as a privately held company.

From wiki: "Guitar Center's sister companies/subsidiaries incorporate
  • Music & Arts Center,
    Musician's Friend,
    GuitarCenter.com,
    LMI,
    Giardinelli,
    Musician.com,
    Private Reserve Guitars,
    Woodwind and Brasswind and
    Harmony Central."

Alex,

As long as we're citing Wiki.....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:B ... _companies" target="_blank
Look under the G's.

It has to do with the Parent Company, not the sister company.

Correction noted.

The sister companies were merely listed in my post as information. Inquiring minds want to know stuff.
