Egads! Looks like an Eb tuba that someone has tried to add a copious amount of tubing to leadpipe. The ferrules on the added tubing do not match the rest of the horn. What a mess!

Well, to be fair, it looks like he not only tried, but may very well have succeeded in adding that tubing. At least 6 feet, what do you think? Enough to put the tuning of the valves in some doubt, so maybe it doesn't matter so much what key that would put the tuba in, but just to be a sport I'll guess that it's an F to BBb conversion (I've never heard of an F that looked like that, but my estimate of the length came out to 12 feet.) Pull that stuff off and find a new leadpipe for it, and it might be an OK bass tuba, again subject to match with the valve tubing.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

I e-mailed the seller asking what key this thing was in- he didn't know, but found another slide in the chest where it was stored- possibly the original since the patina matched. So he ended the auction early pending further research.

My uneducated guess would be EEb tuba that somebody built a main slide to convert to a BBb. Good news that he still has the original slide . . .
