Hello all,
Currently working on the band transcription of Respighi's Feste Romane and the lower part (my part) has some technically challenging material in the first movement, specifically the triple tonguing in the lower register. I'm just curious as to what other people do to deal with this. Is there a secret I'm missing, or do I just need to suck it up (or both)?

Multiple tonguing in low register
There are appropriate times for beauty and crudeness - use both.

Sorry about that...
Have you tried slow triple with a big air accent on the "ka", and then working up the speed. I find that helps the clarity of my triple tonguing no end.

Stupid writing. Multiple tonguing in that range is certainly possible, but the chances of most sections being
able to do it clearly, as a unit, is slim.

Re: Multiple tonguing in low register
For multiple tonguing in the low register I use a bastardized K syllable that is more like the gutteral sound of the "H" in the Hebrew language. Just listen to the proper pronounciation of "l'hiem" and this will give you an idea of the changes that I make for that register. You will also find triple tonguing on a pedal F in many of the arrangements from Star Wars.
All the best to you.

Been there, done that, got a t-shirt; and then wished that the orchestrator realized that we are not all Jim Self.Roger Lewis wrote:You will also find triple tonguing on a pedal F in many of the arrangements from Star Wars.

Practicing with a lot of accent on the beat toughens up the needed tissue, and lavishing a lot of practice time on it is good too.
