Hey folks,
One of the saddest things about our instrument is the apparent dearth of avant-garde literature for us. Do any of you know of some good avant-garde euphonium solos or tuba quartets? As far as solos go, I'm aware of Steven's "Soliloquies," but that's where it ends. I also know of no literature for tuba quartet that pushes any sort of compositional boundaries, and I would much appreciate some recommendations here as well!
As a note, what I refer to when I describe "avant-garde" can mean any of the following, but is by no means limited to this list:
Serialism (not exactly avant-garde, but still interesting enough)
Total serialism (i.e. Boulez)
Texturalism (i.e. Penderecki)
Microtonalism (i.e. Scelsi)
Chance music (i.e. Cage)
Minimalism (i.e. Reich)
Eclecticism (i.e. Maxwell-Davies)
Danger music (i.e. Higgins)
and anything else that pushes boundaries!!
Thank you all for your input!
David

(note: "our instrument" here primarily refers to the euphonium, as the tuba has a few tasty solos available, such as the Furies and Penderecki's Capriccio)

There's Gunther Schuller. FIVE MOODS FOR TUBA QUARTET (1973).

N.B. It's for Tuba quartet and not Tuba-Euphonium Quartet. Though I think the top two parts a playable on Euphonium. (I read it several years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy.)

Maybe not avant-garde enough, but along with Sotto Voce Cimarron Music Press commissioned a new tuba quartet from Anthony Plog a few years back. You can find it on our site or from your favorite retailer.

The Tuba Quartets of George Heussenstamm are quite interesting and The Glider Landscape by Peter Smalley.
