British Open 2012
Hi,
It's probably gone unnoticed by most on this forum but the British Open Brass Band Championships took place on Saturday. Fodens Band won it after an electrifying performance of the test piece Electra by Martin Ellerby. I was lucky enough to have been asked to help them out just a week before the contest due to their regular player being poorly and not able to rehearse.
Here's a picture of the band (a bit blurred) on stage at Symphony Hall - I'm the one with the odd coloured bell.

Well done! Some of my nerdier friends were there to watch.
The Swedish Open is in November. I will perform there with Malmö Brass Band. Test piece: Stonehenge... so I better go practice!

Nothing nerdy about listening to 17 brass bands all playing the same piece of musicelihellsten wrote:Well done! Some of my nerdier friends were there to watch.

I played Stonehenge at the World Music Contest at Kerkrade in 1993 with Desford - it's a great piece. Look out for the gregorian chant section.
Good luck

This is the first time I heard this piece of music. I enjoyed it very much. It was well performed.

As one of the three adjudicators at this year's British Open Championship I can vouch that Phil's band - Fodens did indeed play a storming performance and were worthy winners! Congratulations Phil!!

Thanks Steve. I'm pleased to say that they've asked me to play at the National Championships too so see you at the Royal Albert Hall next month for a nice bit of Ravel.
