One Orchestral Composition

Post by Steve Marcus »

If you had to choose ONE* orchestral piece that met these criteria (in no order of priority):

- appeal and interest to general audience
- appeal and interest to fellow orchestra players
- interesting and engaging tuba part

...which piece would you choose?

*OK, if you must name more than one such piece, go ahead.

Thanks very much!

The Planets by Holst.Great bass tuba and tenor tuba parts. I think it fits all your criteria.

My two choices would be The Planets and The Rite of Spring.
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

Cockaigne Overture- Elgar
Tintagel- Bax

Both are very nice pieces that audiences seemed to have liked and musicians appreciated. Neither is over 15' long.

I would also have to add:

Blanik from Ma Vlast-Smetana
Carnival Overture- Dvorak

The Dvorak is a "blast" to play and generally gets audiences on their feet. I have never played the piece, nor conducted it, where all parties concerned didn't have a smile on their faces when it was done.
