Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra

Post by TinyTubist97 »

I live almost exactly 3 hours away from the ASYO location and im debating whether I should try to do it. I was mainly wondering if the experience of the symphony would be more beneficial than the lost practice time. If it helps any, I want to play in a symphony down the road.

You should at least audition for it. That experience is valuable whether you make it or not, and frankly, for an audition, that IS close.

Whether a 1.5 hour drive each way is worth it on a regular basis, that's up to you and your level of discipline. No matter what, you are going to spend at least 3 hours NOT playing tuba every day. It's a matter of if you can accomplish other useful things during that time. If you are driving, listening to and studying music is a good use of time. If someone else is driving you, you could do your homework in the car.

Oh, and I'm not sure who would be paying for gas, but that's a lot of driving and it ain't cheap. Not to mention Atlanta traffic, which can be pretty awful.

Definitely it would be worthwhile to prepare and take the audition. Do you know what the commitment is if you get in?
I would also check to see what pieces are programmed as there may not be tuba in all of them.
I don't know what format the ASYO use for rehearsing but it would be safe to assume that there will sectional work under a symphony pro at some stage. Find out who it will be and maybe that experience alone will make the trips worthwhile
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.
