Hey Bloke,

Have you ever read Daniel Coyle's book "The Talent Code"? It provides some great scientific insight into this very issue (he refers to it as "deep practice"). One thing that I have noticed with a lot of great players is that many of them seem to have gone through a period of time where they practiced in large quantities before finding the "right" amount of time to get the maximum improvement. I overpracticed for a year, but I feel it was during that time that I made a lot of self discovery about how I should approach things and how to be efficient in the practice room. I highly recommend that book if you haven't checked it out, some really fascinating insights into what "talent" really is.

Very nice article! I'm always looking for better ways to practice. I find myself drifting into the "mindless practice" mode quite often. I usually can tell if I've had a productive practice session if I feel very good about it afterwards.
