awesome tuning app for android

Post by toeter »

Hi,

For practicing purposes I was looking for a good tuning device that would work well with a tuba. I own a korg ca-30, which is reasonably good, especially for the price I paid for it, but in the low register I don't find it very good. I have a few other < €40 devices that I never use because I don't trust them enough.
I checked the Tubenet for advice but didn't find recommendations for anything easily available to me, so I decided to see what was in the android app store.
I once bought an app called gStrings, which is a fine app but suffers from the same problem as most ordinary tuning devices: below C2 it's quirky and unreliable, sometimes simply indicating the wrong pitch, or none at all.
And then I found DA tuner (I am on the beta version now which is free). I was excited and quite astonished to see that it recognizes all pitches I can play on my tuba, all the way down into the pedal register (F 0 being the lowest norw I played). It is fast as well.
I've been using it for two days now and didn't find any drawbacks except maybe for the slightly non-intuitive interface of the pitch pipe. So I decided to share my enthusiasm with you guys.
Of course, results vary depending on your type of android device. On my Alcatel OT-995, it works great.
Hope this may help some of you!

It might just be me, or my phone (LG Gossip Pro), but I've found Datuner lite to be unreliable for me. The readings I got were about 10-15 cents flatter than on a Peterson digital strobe. I have the Peterson app for IPod and I've borrowed a Peterson digital strobe for a while. Both of those are much more reliable...

That said, the app seemed to work better in a higher range. (i.e. On a euphonium) It might just be that the microphone on my phone sucks in the low range...

I'll also mention a great tuner app for iPhone: TonalEnergy Tuner is great! It's 4 bucks, but I would highly recommend the purchase. Check it out. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tonalene ... 16362?mt=8" target="_blank" target="_blank
