Mr Harv Hartman, Happy Horn pass away

Post by Tumbao65 »

This was the lates on him by Andrea Hartman

Dad update: We stayed with him over the night. Mom left to shower and when she got back, I left. Jeff and I got to the hospital and he opened his eyes a bit and got goosebumps on his arms and then just stopped breathing. It was very peaceful. And just like dad to wait for us to get back...selfless even in death. We don't have a date, but we will be having one big party to celebrate Harv. Again, I will never be able to express how much your support has meant. Thank you! XO

Please, although we deeply appreciate your thoughts please do not send flowers or food. We are working on setting up a donation in honor of dad. Thanks!

I like to share something I readed in Andrea page abouth Harv.

This is Harv: by Elizabeth Coyle

"The Successful Life"
To laugh often and love much. To win and hold the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of little children. To earn the approval of honest critics and to endure without flinching the betrayal of false friends.

To appreciate beauty always, whether in earth’s creations or men and women’s handiwork. To have sought for and found the best in others, and to have given it oneself. To leave the world better than one found it, whether by nurturing a child or garden patch, writing a cheery letter, or working to redeem some social condition.

To have played with enthusiasm, laughed with exuberance, and sung with exultation; to go down to dust and dreams knowing the world is a little bit better, and even a single life breathes easier because we have lived well, that is to have succeeded.

He was the best friend a tuba player could it have. He will be miss!!! :tuba: R.I.P

Very sad news. Please tell the family that Harv's Tubenet friends share their grief.

Very sad news!

Harv and I were not close, but we wrote together in between.

I have one of his more odd creations (his funny tubas almost becoming a standard of their own): a soprano trombone in Bb made out of Reynolds parts.

The slide is a shortened tenor slide with the stockings kept. As the cutting was done from the end near the handgrip, there is no venturi, so playing it in tune takes good embouchure and good air support.

The gooseneck is shortened, and the bell bow is from the trombone. The bell is from a cornet, and the tuning is done by pulling the bell out on the tenon of the bell bow.

Harv never spoke about any of his math calc systems, but there must have been some system, as his works do not look like done by trial & error corrections.

We fortunately still have great and sophisticated repairmen among us, but the maverick tuba reorganizer has gone.

R.I.P. Harv!

I was honored to meet Harv and visit him twice over the years. He did great work on 3 of my son's tubas, and my daughters euphonium.
Although we probably spoke less than 2 dozen times, I feel a strong sense of loss for myself, my family, and music in general.
Will lift his family in prayer, and by family I mean them and all of us.

This instrument was done by Harv

1.Yamaha 321 Eb, with king piston, rotor made in Chine ( you have to have something from China :)
2. Rain Catcher, Harv style: Valve Martin(re-build, great action), Body Conn fiberglass(pain in black), Bell King(from front bell King).

A lot of fun to play them, and Now a lot of memories from my friend. :tuba:

Really sad news.

Harv had what I like most about tuba players - character. You have to love his awesome creations and they will continue to represent his talent

far into the future. He was a guy who could think outside the limitations of conventional design.

Harv you will be missed and remembered fondly.

Harv sold me one of my Martin sousaphones some years back and I visited his place in Pennsylvania on that occasion. He was very warm and down-to-earth and was also, in an increasingly "cookie-cutter" world, a unique individual, (phenomenon I'm seeing less of these days, unfortunately). Above all, he clearly loved what he did and also loved sharing it with others.

May God Bless Harv

Klaus, amazingly, Harv's "calc system" was a piece of string cut to the appropriate length!!!! He had string cut to the length of each valve and each bugle for horns in each key. He had a great eye and could visualize what he wanted to make. And he had tons of patience! He never rushed anything. (I hate to give away trade secrets... )

Words can not express how much I miss Harv. When I first met him, he was mostly fixing sousaphones and I knew right away that he had a special talent. He was the first man who was willing to help me with the crazy projects that I had in my head, including the contrabass french horn, a Conn 26J in CC, and Sergio Carolino’s Lucifer.

He has influenced me on a level as Don Harry or Roger Bobo even though he never had any formal training in music or musical instrumental repair. He was 100% self taught which makes him even more special because he was not afraid to find simple solutions to some of the challenges that are faced when putting instruments together.

There will never be a day where I won't think of Harv. He truly lived up to his name (Man of HeART).

It was 9 years ago this month when I decided to get into playing Tuba. I purchased a very beat up Besson Sousaphone on flea-bay and it was missing the first valve. I posted something up about it here, on TubeNet and Harv sent me his phone number. I called and Harv ordered the valve, top, mouthpipe and bits for me at COST and told me to send him a check when I could. I was a total stranger to him and he went far out of his way to help me get the only horn I could afford at the time up and running. There are not too many folks out there who would go out of their way for no profit other than the satisfaction of helping a fellow musician and human. I will miss seeing Harv's listings on the auction site and mostly miss knowing that a real, caring person is no longer part of our Tuba community.

God bless you Harv and I'm sure you just hit the jackpot in Heaven!

This places Harv in a tradition I learned of when writing the company history booklet for the 2nd centennial of the Copenhagen brass company I. K. Gottfried. They stopped making brasses, but for lurs, when they ran out of materials in 1943 and didn’t resume production after WWII due to GDR and Czechoslovakia dumping brass instruments on West European markets.

But the company archives still hold a tiny black notebook with the length and other dimensions for various instruments hand written in inches.
