Based on this, I would say that the prices quoted to you are significantly higher than you should pay. Call the other stores listed in the shops section of this site to get other prices.
The Miraphone 186 is probably the prototypical 4/4 sized rotary valve tuba. They are very good all around tubas that can be used in almost any setting.

I believe that you read their "manufacturer's list price" as the price without a trade-in. Their no-trade price is actually $5,599, which isn't too bad, although higher than some.
I have had good experience with Taylor music in the several transactions I have had with them. In fact, my Martin BAT was a horn on which they performed an econo overhaul and I am very happy with it. They specialize in the school market and especially selling refurbished instruments for reasonable prices. I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them.
