Uni-Tec Case & Miraphone 1291??

Post by Dan Schultz »

Does anyone use a Uni-Tec case to transport a Miraphone 1291 BBb? There doesn't seem to be much information out there that says what cases work with what horns.

I only know about MTS and Miraphone cases, but the MTS 1207 fits my 1291 and the J Winter case, model 995 ABS fits it as well. J Winter makes the Miraphone cases.

MTS has a very friendly website and if you put in the requested info they will let you know which case will fit your horn. They were really nice to me after I bought a case and did some customization to get a better fit.

The MTS cases are my favorite hard cases, lots of protection, made in USA, and not too heavy.

And, the company stands behind their products.

I think that the Uni-Tec cases have been improved over the years, but I know very little about them.

A former student of mine purchased a Unitec case for his 1291 CC. I assume that the same case could be used for the BBb. As you no doubt know, the Unitec case is built like a tank, yet his bell was badly bent by the baggage monkeys on a flight to Washington DC.

As a followup... there was a UniTec case for sale that I considered buying but it has been sold. I had a St. Pete in the shop couple of years ago that was fitted with a custom UniTec case. I liked the ruggedness of the case even though it was very heavy and difficult to heft in and out of a vehicle.

I'm currently using a plywood case that was built for a Bohn & Meinl-build Marzan. It's a good case and just happens to also work well with my Miraphone 1291. I spend a lot of time 'on the road' with my horns and have the case fitted on the bell end with 5" rubber casters so it will roll freely over cracked sidewalks and also navigate my rock driveway quite well. The wheels that come on most tuba cases just won't serve my purposes.

I was sort of hoping to buy the UniTec case.... fit it with a large set of wheels and 'retire' my Marzan case. The fact that is is quite heavy would have been OK since I normally just roll it to my Blazer, tip it up, and slide it into the back.

I've just not nuts about vacuum-formed plastic cases with 'dinky' wheels and handles that break.
