I was just at Woodwind Brasswind on February 11th and did not see any tubas bearing this brand name. The idea of the manufacturer using words like 'Swiss' and 'Berlin' to describe what are obviously imports appears a bit deceptive to me!

I just noticed. "Daylan" is so close to "Dylan". I have heard more than a few people pronounce my name "Daylan" over the years. I wonder is there is a connection.

I would guess not. I have had white, black, hispanic, and asian people pronounce my name that way. Maybe way more people know about these tubas then we thought.

The Dalyan ("Dalyan", not "Daylan") tubas are being imported by Orpheus Music in San Antonio. They used to be the Miraphone importer in the U.S., and they also imported many of the instruments coming out of the Markneukirchen area right after German unification. They still sell instruments, but had gotten out of the tuba business. Apparently they are now back in it.

Orpheus has always had a good reputation, and have always sold instruments that were a good value. I suspect the prices you see on the Dalyan website are list prices before being very substantially discounted, as with, say, Miraphone (would anybody really pay $11,000 for a 186?).

And tubas as Orpheus were always tried out by real tuba players. Lee Hipp has already mentioned these instruments, and he'll be playing them as they come in.

But I'll bet that TubaRay could be arm-twisted into taking a stroll out to Orpheus to give them a blow, if they are actually on these shores. Are they "Good", or "Good for the money"?

These tubas actually might be a great deal. They sure sound good for the price. It's kind of like buying one of those Chinese DVD players.

My thoughts exactly. The discounted prices seem a little high to me compared to even Euro inflated prices for other, more established brands. Their price for a piston valve BBb is about the same as that for a King 2341. If they really wanted to penetrate the market with an unknown brand I would think that a lower price would be necessary to entice people to try them.

I know nothing of the quality of these, and they may be very good tubas, but that doesn't justify the price for an unknown.

FYI:
Lee tells me that Orpheus has several different models
in BBb, one CC, one Eb, and one F. He also says that they all
will go for under 4K (with a decent case included).

Looking at the Dalyan prices I am kind of curious why they have such a braod range in prices. I am also wondering why they have so many more BBb tubas and only one of each in CC Eb and F?

Any mass production operation is going to offer the widest variety to the largest segment of the market--it's just good sense. So, who do you think buys the most tubas?
