They also use herald trumpets on occasion, and their drill unit is excellent. Well worth a few minutes to watch and listen!

Aside from the instructing officers and warrant officers the band is started from the ground up of new draftees every late summer and dismissed after the summer seasons’ national and international military displays.

The band starts with the math, which is determined by the narrow streets of the medieval Norwegian inner cities which are frequently visited and paraded. First row of the band has 6 trombones. Second row has 3 Eb tubas and 3 BBb tubas, all British style 3+1 compensators, which are carried in an uncomfortable vertical fashion, because the 6 man abreast formation calls for very tight marching. Some years 7 tubists are drafted, but only 6 are allowed into band performances.

They perform fairly regularly at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. ALWAYS something to appreciate. Hate to say it but, the Australian military band was just NOT in the same league last time. Unfortunately mil bands here have been severely downgraded and are almost being killed off. Used to be high standard, professional units.
A sign of the times that "cultural" activities are being sacrificed to pure greed.

They are only in for a year, but there again. All the better players from school bands etc. usually apply to have their military service done at HMKG

Is military service required in Norway?

Used to be very strict, but I think one can noways easier get away with community service etc if one should have reasons not to join
