I have a pal who is visiting New York for 4 days in March. Are there any instrument shops (brass, but bass trom specifically) in the city itself? He'd like to possibly try and get hold of a new Bass Trom while he's over in the US, but won't have his own transport whilst there.

Living near NYC I will second Andy's advice. There are a few little places in the city, but nothing with even close to the selection as you'll find at dillons. And from the city is a very very easy commute...if you need more info please PM me and i will gladly walk you through it, if you need. Have fun happy shopping (you're friend does have room to bring back a NEW bass trombone I hope, after he gets done trying the selection at dillons......

yeah,
dillon's is cool, they have always been great to me as far as trying out horns, understanding the plight a a starving college student (at that time) and taking care of repairs and what not. They are the real deal, top notch all the way.
But, if you can't leave the city at all, there is a Woodwond and Brasswind store in midtown, but the last time I was there they only had a couple of tubas, I don't remember what they had as far as bass trombones.

Stick with Dillon's. There are some shops on music row that are mostly keyboards, guitars, and drums. There are a couple that will sell used horns but the price tags are ridiculous. I guess they have to pay the rent as well. For example, I found a used Rudi 3/4 that had an $8500 tag on it. It was far from new and I found nothing to justify the high price other than bait for an unknowing buyer. Everyone at Dillon's will treat you well. Enjoy the trip.

Across the street from Lincoln Center is Rayburn Music's New York store. It's a small shop, but if they don't have what you are looking for, they can get it from the Boston store... so call ahead. http://www.rayburnmusic.com/featured/mo ... &artid=111
Also, on 48th Street, just east of Broadway there are several stores that have bass trombones. Sam Ash, Mannys, Robertos and Rod Baltimore all have a small selection of new and/or used instruments.
But as everyone else has mentioned, the best selection by far is at Dillons, a short train ride from NYC. As far as tubas go, this is the ONLY place worth mentioning in the area.
Also, on 48th Street, just east of Broadway there are several stores that have bass trombones. Sam Ash, Mannys, Robertos and Rod Baltimore all have a small selection of new and/or used instruments.
