Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Ask your professor/teacher.
Ask Dan Schultz. He knows just about everything.

I have a Conn 20J sitting in my garage that I can no longer play due to old age and decrepitude. Dan restored it like new a few years ago, both bells, cases. See it viewtopic.php?f=4&t=48393&p=424708&hili ... 0J#p424708

The perfect instrument for you is the French C tuba. It is small enough to be comfortable, has six valves, and can be played in the high range very easily. They are somewhat hard to find now but worth the wait.

Wow ok yeah I was pretty vague. I've been playing school horns for about 9 years now. I've just been browsing around and getting advice from professors and such. Just came on here for some more advice from people who have more experience with purchasing horns. I've only ever played a BBb. Im an education/performance duel major to answer one of the questions. However, I'm not planning on doing anything professional. I think I answered my own question. People on here are such snobs jeez lol give me a break.

Both pitches of 1291 rock. Buy whatevers cheaper and fits you. Also ignore the CC SUPERIORITY thing. The 1291 Bb is pretty sweet.
Yours is a perfectly reasonable question to ask random tuba players. No one's saying you're bound to take such advice.

So, you're not planning on doing anything professional but want to drop several $K on a tuba. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Some more snobby, unsolicited advice. Get out of education. I really don't want people who can't spell "dual" teaching children.

Going for a 1291 BB, you might wanna add a basstuba to your stable
A CC is more a 'do it all tuba' (IMO)

As for old shitty persons.....

Some advice regarding major duels: better win them or you won't be doing anything amateur, either.

Thank you everyone for the last minute advice and constructive criticism. To clear up a few things, I've been browsing tubas for the past year and a half. In this time, I have asked for advice from several people including old middle school teachers, high school teachers, professors, and tuba players who have been playing for 50+ years. My reason for coming on here was simply to get some last minute advice from people who might know even more about purchasing tubas. I will make sure I practice dueling as well :P. My future plan is to become a music educator but that doesn't mean I'll just quit playing tuba and teach. Most junior highs that I have been to don't even have a tuba lying around nor can they afford them and what would I do then O_o? Also, I have several non school related performances lined up as well and owning my own horn would just be more convenient not to mention, would give me more practice time. To add to this post, I play in a municipal band in summer as well and borrowing from schools gets little pathetic at some point. All in all, I went with the BBb. To the select few who actually gave some advice, thank you again. Live long and tuba.

If your last post had been contained in your first, the approach towards you had been different.

No problem, that's why (most of us) are here. Interested to hear what model :tuba: - the 1291 BBb?

Why mean?

If any web-forum advise would ever be of any value, then only on basis of a thorough set of information provided by the person asking. TN has had so many funny questions, that somebody asking without providing specific background information is, and should be, met with suspicion.

To what end? Will these suspicions stamp out trolling? Will they improve the quality of advice dispensed here? Could this thread be held forth as an example of whatever it is we stand to gain? After a couple of pages it seems to have degenerated into Tubenet Crank Reunion, with not even a pretense at relevance to tubas, and as I write this it's 5 pages.

The value of advice here is limited, as you say, by the information presented in the questions, so by all means let people know when they're in effect asking a stupid question. But as bad as it can get, it will be over quicker if we just assume for all intents and purposes that they're genuine, and in the end it doesn't make any difference.

There are four encouraging things about the OP, whatever his age:

1- he plays the TUBA;

2- he wants to improve his TUBA situation;

3- he is willing to make a substantial financial investment to do so, and

4- he is getting as much input as possible before spending his money.

Otherwise he would not have posted here.

C'mon guys, we can respond better than this.

People on here are such snobs jeez
This is when he jumped the shark. It demonstrated a lack of respect as well as sufficient maturity to see some folks were trying to give advice through humor, as well as pulling his leg a bit. Folks in their own way were trying to help him if only indirectly showing he either already knew what he wanted and was looking for a rubber stamp from the board or that only he (not the TNFJ) could make a proper choice. Life is tough and the music biz is even tougher. Getting a friendly pat on the head in the long run isn't very useful This isn't tots baseball anymore where everybody is a winner and everybody goes home with a trophy. Sometimes you lose, but you are only a loser if you don't pick yourself up, dust off your pants, learn from your loss and take another swing at whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.

or he should wait for the tuba god to be reactivated and ask him to pick out which horn will give him a "world class sound". :shock:

Well, we certainly gave the OP some sharks to jump (yes, I'm familiar with where the term came from). OTOH, he also got some pretty good advice. No, I don't personally know him.

Something to think about: How many of us would still be playing if we'd gotten too much negativity (either real or perceived) before we were older and our skins were thick enough that it didn't matter?

We were all newbies once. I say again: we can do better.
