Another shank/receiver type question

Post by Tubajug »

Since I'm going to have to replace the leadpipe on my Lyon & Healey Eb anyway, I was curious about replacing the receiver too. I'm just going to rattle off a series of questions, feel free to answer any/all of them. Many thanks!

Since it fit a Denis Wick 4 mouthpiece, are there other mouthpieces readily available that would fit it or is that an odd size? (If I keep the receiver that was originally on the horn)

If I fit it with a standard receiver, would a Helleberg 7B still be to "big" of a mouthpiece on such a small Eb?

Do these small horns generally play better/more in tune with a smaller mouthpiece than my 7B?

Any other suggestions/thoughts/insights?

Thanks as always!

Yes. That's an odd size, and there are other Denis Wick models that are equally available (I use a 5.)

You might get along with it, but yes, a smaller mouthpiece might suit the tuba better. I don't know exactly how small your tuba is, but thinking of the small Eb I've seen in person ... I think tubas that size have been extinct for generations, and no one's making mouthpieces for them. In your case it might make more sense to stay with the small receiver, use the DW 4 you already have (?), start saving for a Doug Elliot system and possibly try some extra large bass trombone mouthpieces. The latter may or may not fit well, and in my view are likely to work better for trombone than tuba, but you can judge for yourself. I'm talking about stuff like the Laskey 95D, Josef Klier P03, just short of 30mm diameter.
