Monette Specs

Post by Billy M. »

Hey guys,

I've tried going through advanced search but was unable to find anything... does anyone know the actual specs of Monette tuba mouthpieces?

I've been using one for several years and have never found out what it may be "likened to."

I know they have some unique characteristics (such as the thick-walled shank) but stuff like the inner rim diameter, cup depth, outer rim diameter, throat, etc et al would be useful.

Thanks!

I too have been playing on Monette MPs for a few years. The first one I bought on a whim and found it to be special in view of the 20 other MPs sitting on the window sill. I believe knowing the physical dimensions or cup and back bore contours would not be helpful. It's the playing characteristics that count. Ignore the dimensions. My bad habit is 5 or more times a year playing through at least 5 MPs (squinting at the drill holes and back bores) on the same horn to see if there is some advantage with a non-Monette MP. Almost always I end up with the Monette. But it doesn't work so well for me on a cimbasso nor a Rudi 5/4. Works well for me on Hirs CC & F, Gronitz F, and Willson 3050 and 3400. Just get and play on 5-10 other MPs to see my point.

My main intention for this is to help me design (or find a competitor's matching equivalent) a euphonium mouthpiece with a perfect matching rim.

I stand behind the belief that one should not change rims between horns.

A little bit off-topic, but I would like to strenghen DonnieMac's point! The only Monette funnel shaped mouthpiece is the 94, which seems to have similar specs as the Schilke Helleberg 2. I tend to refrain from woofy sounding deep cups for large tubas, such as the Schilke, but boy the Monette is a whole different story.. It just seems to work.
