Conn 46k

Post by butch »

Hello Tubenetters

On a "corkboard" on the internet I saw a notice of a guy who wants to sell his Conn 46k sousaphone. The notice says it's made in 1924. He doesn't mention a price.
So my question is, how much would you pay for a sousaphone like this? What is a "fair" price?

Thanks for your answers!
Butch

PS: The seller states, that it's a rare instrument and that only 20 instruments exist worldwide.

Without know particulars regarding the exact condition... I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. If it has good valves and a descent finish... I would think the bidding should start around $1,500 and perhaps go as high as $2,750.

Of course, pristine condition, a travel case, etc. would escalate the price accordingly.

There are no pictures on the site. I try to get some from the seller.

The seller sent me some pictures.

And he demands 7'000 € (about 9'200 $) for the sousaphone, which is too much for me. :(

Well, he invited me to play it at his place. I suppose the second pic is from his garage, as he plays a 20K as well. He said, that he got the sousaphone in Amsterdam.

Kiltie is correct. Pictures one and three were taken here in my music room. I don't know where the second one was taken. I sold the satin gold to Patrick Votrian in Amsterdam several years ago. I contacted Patrick and confirmed that he sold the horn a short time ago.

It appear to be legit.
