How to handle payment for local deals?

Post by bort »

I have bought and sold several tubas through TubeNet, but it has always involved shipping (cashier's check payment due up-front, then I [or the seller] will ship the tuba).

It looks like my F tuba will soon be sold, and through a local deal. What's the best way to handle in-person, hand-to-hand deals? Is it any different? I suppose cash is an option now, but that's just too much to carry around. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks! :tuba:

The cleanest way to do it is to arrange to meet the buyer at a branch of your bank, deposit the check/cash immediately, hand over the tuba when the funds have been confirmed.

As a matter of courtesy, let the branch manager know ahead of time if you go that route so (s)he can alert the staff so no one freaks out when you show up with a strangely shaped package. Most branch managers will be happy to facilitate the transaction and provide an office for the handover to take place out of the public eye.

That's a good idea, thanks! In that case, cash would work, too... either he withdrawals "big bucks" and we make the swap, or he shows up with "big bucks" and I deposit it immediately. It's a bank in New York, so I'm sure there will be a security guard around!
