Holton 345's Survey

Post by rmsrfp »

I have long been a fan of Holton 345's and a couple of years ago I was able to finally snag a great one (modified factory CC) also during this time I also owned a BB Flat 345 that I sold to Lee Stofer (fine instrument). Since that time I have been amazed by number of Holton 345 variations that are out there in the world, including variations of "unaltered 345's".

Anyway I thought it would be neat to take a survey and maybe post your pictures of the York Copy 345's still out there in the world. I will start with mine !

Which modifications have been done to your 345 CC?

As far as I can see, it has no 5th valve. Is it about the lowering of the leadpipe?

It has a custom lead pipe that I am not a fan of, however the bell and bottom bow are off a 1922 York.

how do the York parts change the sound and playability from the factory 345?

My immediate take would be that we are closer to a conglomerated instrument than to a Holton 345. Not that this fact at all detracts from your tuba.

I believe the York bell and bow where added in the 1970's by Mr. Barth. So I am not sure how it played before but I have played a couple of factory CC's and as far as play-ability I found the York Bell seems to have more ring and at times a little more bit, and that might be because of the 22" bell. I have also played a Factory CC 345 with the Kanstul Holton/York Alloyed Bell and it was comparable with mine.

I had a custom lead pipe put on the instrument a few years ago and at first I liked it but recently I think it's not quiet right this instrument so I am thinking of having Lee Stofer Put one on the instrument.

Hopefully Dan Oberloh will chime in on this thread. He started a database of Holton 345's with their serial numbers, owners names and where they were located. He has been keeping this database for over 8 years that I know of, and I know mine is in it.

My BBb vintage 1966 was completely restored by Dan as of May 2010:

What it looked like before:

Previous owner was Steven Call, tuba professor at BYU. Before that he said it was at a Utah high school.
