Debate - cordura or leather case?
Hello tubists at large!
I have finally decided to spurge and get myself a Cronkhite gig bag, but I have going back and forth for weeks on end about whether I would be okay with getting the cordura for a lot of money or getting the leather which I've wanted for quite some time for a LOT of money. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Someone wise once told me, "Get what you want the first time, or else you'll end up buying it twice once you've replaced it."
I feel like if you really want to get the leather bag, save the money up so you can fit it in your budget.

I have several US made Blues Reunion gig bags for various brasses. My first one was/is leather, the later ones are cordura.
For me the cordura bags became the preferred ones because the they are lighter and because they don’t need maintenance with saddle soap like the leather one.
Of interest for tubist might be what several bag owners have told about: the leather bags are stiffer and hence protect better.

I bought leather for the following reasons:
A) It looks cool!
B) Cat hairs don't stick to it.
FWIW

I'm just wondering if the extra $$ for the leather is going to offer me significantly more protection since it's stiffer material. I'm not too worried if there is extra maintenance involved.

If one can comfortably afford leather, I recommend a hard case.Adam Peck wrote:If one can comfortably afford leather, I reccommend it.

I've had a Reunion Blues cordura bag for my euph for over 25 years and it's still in great condition. I'm not sure leather would hold up so well for so long of a time. The leather fittings show the most wear but the cordura looks great.

Aesthetically, the leather does get scuffed up, and such, but I assume that the leather lasts most cows, for quite a while!

Re: Debate - cordura or leather case?
It's not so much that leather gets old as it is that it dries out. Remember, leather is made from cow skin, and without conditioning, it will dry and start to degrade. With a little (easy!) preventative maintenance, a leather bag of any kind will easily last 25 years, and the fabric should really last you the rest of your life.
Personally, I think even "just" the cordura that Cronkhite uses on his bags is fantastic. The leather is fantastic + 1.

I use my leather gigbag for everyday use and have done so for the past 2-3 years. It works great. It's a Precieux bag, not sure if they are made anymore though. It looks just like this anyhow: http://di1-3.shoppingshadow.com/images/ ... +leder.jpg" target="_blank
Although is not a bag made specifically for the Norwegian Star, it is a perfect fit. And I don't feel that it is particularly heavy either.

As I've been shamed into getting a leather bag for my small (again, I just don't have the ambition to earn enough money for a "big") tuba, I've put the little woman on the task of pulling her bow and arrows out of the teepee and shooting a nice size deer, skinning it, tanning it with the brains (as she - being from The South - is part Injun), and lashing sections of it together (with drawn deer gut) for me. When - perhaps someday (??) - I make it to the *Big City with my small deerskin tuba bag, the know-better Yankees can laugh if they want to, but we Southerners are proud...and just too damned ignorant to be shamed by those who appreciate the finer things in life.
Besides, as we have chemical waste and untreated sewage flowing in the ditches along the sides of our dirt roads, the carcinogen, bacterial, and viral particulates in the air down here are pretty tough on anything other than brain-tanned deer hides.
