Amazing Kelly MP

Post by tbn.al »

I took my medium/large tenor trombone (Olds 0-25) instead of my bass for the Weber Oberon rehearsal this week. I was dismayed to find I had left my normal mouthpiece, Schilke 58, for doing light bass work with this horn at home. I had to pull my spare out of the glovebox which is a Kelly 1 1/2G. I was amazed at how much better it was than the Schilke for this kind of work. Intonation was great and the sound quality although light was not barky like I get sometimes with the Schilke. Long story short I'm playing the concert this weekend on a blue plastic Kelly, and taking a lot of grief from my section in the process. Ha! Never dreamed it. Maybe I should get one for my tuba?
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

I was lucky enough to grab one of the Kelly KT-50 (tuba) mouthpieces early in the development. It's always in my accessory pouch.

the elephant wrote:My Kellyberg is a very good mouthpiece, but my Kelly 18 is stellar for some things. I hate Bach 18 style mouthpieces, but this one is a real gem. I can lay out The Ride and Fountains with it quite well and with an unfamiliar ease. Both are definite keepers. And I too take a lot of crap for using them...

WHOA!... an AGR? I thought I was the only person who actually used one!

I like the Kelly 1½G, and I've heard good things about it from people who unlike me actually know how to play bass trombone. Too bad they discontinued it.

I use the Kelly 18 quite a bit along with a couple other mpcs.
I did a sound comparison with one a while back. Lets just say it won big time over some more expensive metal mpcs I have. They are good mouthpieces :!: Wish they would come out with the Kelly 12 and Kelly 7 sizes though.

I also have two Kelly 18 tuba mouthpieces for general outdoor use, and some indoor use as necessary. I wrapped the throat of mine with one layer of golfer's lead tape, which tames the "barkiness" even more.
