Interesting Miraphone 184

Post by Euphtub »

Has anybody tried this horn at Baltimore Brass?

I'm very interested to know how well in tune it plays and how it sounds.

Can anyone see any potential problems with this horn—bell configuration?

The bell is so short, I wonder if there's room for your head?

I'd seen an identical instrument being modified at the Meinl-Weston factory about 1995; maybe it's even this axe. I was told it was intended for use in a pit (low ceiling).

It almost looks like a Miraphone "Piggy". That's why I'm curious. I've been looking to replace my King 2341 with a CC tuba. I need a compact horn, like the King. I teach about 50 private lessons a week, frequent masterclasses, play in a quintet, church orchestras, bands, jazz combos, orchestra pits, etc. I also have a Hyundai Veloster, so it has to be short enough to fit in my hatchback with my Willson 2900 euphonium. The 2341 and the Willson fit like a game of Tetris, so a new tuba would need to do the same. In my mind, that dictates:

Cerveny Piggy
Yamaha YCB-661
Conn 5XJ
B&S 3097

and this crazy Miraphone at BBC.

I like unique instruments. This seems like it would be either the biggest mistake or the greatest decision I ever made! lol

I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

I did some research after the suggestion. Probably not going to work for my needs.

Interesting idea, though.
