YEP-321 receiver questions

How common is it to switch out the receiver of a Yamaha YEP-321 to accept a large shank trombone mouthpiece?
How different from the original would it feel with a large shank receiver and a small shank adapter (if it eventually gets sold, so I don't have to go back and reverse the operation)?

Has anyone done this and how did you like the results?

This request is not that uncommon in my shop. The King 2280 euphonium has a large-shank receiver that is an easy solder-on modification to the YEP-321 euphonium. My experience has been that Yamaha does not want to sell a receiver, you have to buy the entire mouthpipe with receiver to get the receiver. But, the receiver for a King 2280 euphonium is part # K1008 in the Allied catalog, and available to virtually any repair shop technician. They can be ordered in raw brass or silver-plated.

As far as the sound is concerned, this modification should only modify the sound in that different mouthpieces can now be used on the instrument. An adaptor should work fine, provided that everything fits correctly. I would just find a favorite mouthpiece that has a large shank, use it and leave it at that.

The whole reason for this query is that my mouthpiece of choice for trombone is a Bach 3G. I have no trouble with my high range on that mp but hate the thinness in the low range I get with the 6.5 (and for some reason I have never liked the 5G) on the Yamaha.
(One obvious solution would be to buy a bigger-bored horn that is designed for the larger mouthpiece but since I can't afford that...)

Just got the 321 back from the shop with its new King receiver.
It fits great, feels fine, and just totally opened up the low range of the horn.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and help! Now time for renewed enjoyment of this instrument.
