Good stuff. I need to start looking into some of this stuff. I have probably had my head in brass band for far to long.
Brass Band Tacoma
Puget Brass
Willson BBb 3100 FA5
Willson Eb 3400 FA5

..and a miriad of other JUNK not worth mentioning.

A jazz trio with drums, piano and airbass (tuba) could sound good and be just different enough to attract attention and maybe a job or two. Learning to play a few alternative styles could provide a job. It would certainly be better to have a job playing the tuba in a small folk band or a polka show than working in a car parking garage. More skills = more employment playing the tuba.

I've been a fan of the Taj Mahal / HoJo collaborations for over 40 years. Love the new guitar/tuba/drum kit trios Someday Baby (covering Taj) and Boom Pam.

P.S. Someone recently asked in this forum if it was possible for a tubist to approach the "expression" of a tenor singer. Someday Baby's Janos Mazura above I think demonstrates what skill and soul can mean vis a vis large brass instruments. Albert King was called "The Velvet Bulldozer" in honor of his physical size and the delicacy of his vocals. Perhaps we need to find a similarly descriptive term for Janos ...

Hey that's great. Do the live radio broadcasts also have internet broadcast? If so can you list the url? Is there a regular broadcast time for the big band? I'd love to listen - Thanks!

No regular broadcast but all our broadcasts can be heard online as they're being broadcasted. There's also a free software recorder that allows you to set, record and listen back to anything you'd like to hear...

There are a couple of video streams on our website as well, but they are more directed towards a younger audience...

Website: http://www.wdr.de/radio/orchester/bigband/index.html" target="_blank

Radiorecorder: http://www.wdr.de/radio/home/radiorecor ... ndex.phtml" target="_blank

FB: https://www.facebook.com/wdrbigband?fref=ts" target="_blank

If you search on YouTube for "WDR Big Band" there's also a lot of stuff with us, with The Brecker Brothers, Maceo Parker, Joe Zawinul, Roy Hargrove and many others...

It's a great gig :)

On this note, if you haven't heard of him, I can recommend a norwegian colleague, Lars Andreas Haug.
His music moves in the border between contemporary classical music and jazz...on his latest release he plays a modified horn that he calls a "Tubmarine" :)

Nice stuff - wasn't aware of him but will now start listening. It's really nice when the tuba is an integral part of the group. So many times it's like a novelty act at the circus - tuba comes out for a chart - somewhere in middle of chart everybody stops playing - tuba does a 32 bar lick - audience stares and then regular playing resumes.

These guys really belong in this thread. Bending the rules, poking fun at genre definitions ... seem to have a great audience.

At around 2:16 Wilfried Brandstötter (tubist) explains what I think was Joe's impetus for this thread: Simply transcending concepts of genre and the usual. Brilliant stuff!

EDIT:
Completely off topic but at 2:05 I think I see Wilfried's suspension system for moving around while playing. Man, I've tried expensive straps and harnesses and have been unable to make them work. Does anyone have any input on the system that Wilfried is using? Or anything else useful?

I canot find any personnel listing.

Or some New Orleans hot brass doing interpretations of DAFT PUNK?

Brassft Punk and more here.

I haven't found a personnel list yet (it may vary a bit.)
You can find the full tracks on Spotify (if you have it.)

Not a tuba in earshot and the man with iron lungs was beginning to lose it but alternateness:

Edit
Oops, for this audience: The "HoJo" reference is the "other" HoJo: the motel chain which hired musicians to play in the lounge. Not the master tubist HoJo.
