About Orchestra Iowa
Founded in April 1921, Orchestra Iowa is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. Its 82 professional musicians perform more than 120 public performances throughout Eastern Iowa each year, many of which can be heard on Iowa Public Radio and seen on Iowa Public Television.
Orchestra Iowa performs symphonic, operatic, ballet, and youth concerts throughout Iowa. Concerts are primarily presented in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, with additional performances taken throughout the state. Chamber ensembles from the Orchestra perform educational concerts through its Pied Piper Series (pre-school concerts presented at libraries) and Music in the Schools (performances in elementary school classrooms). These ensembles are also featured in recital on the Opus Chamber Series, presented at the Orchestra’s Opus Concert Café and broadcast statewide on Iowa Public Radio. Orchestra Iowa returned to its home at the historic Paramount Theatre in November 2012, four years after floods destroyed much of Cedar Rapids.
