Quintet with Tuba solo/feature

Post by quinterbourne »

I am looking for suggestions for brass quintet pieces that feature tuba or that are for solo tuba (with 2 trumpets, horn & trombone accompaniment).

Ones I have so far:
Tuba Tiger Rag
Tuba (Clarinet) Polka
Largo al Factotum

My quintet wants to put on a recital with each player getting a solo/feature piece so I am looking for something more serious (but not too hard to play).

Thanks in advance!

Cimarron Music has an arrangement of the soprano aria: "O mio babbino caro" for solo tuba, with 2 trumpets, horn & trombone accompaniment.
They even have a sound file, so you can hear it.

There is an arrangement on Cimarron's site (by me) of Endearing Young Charms, which is for a standard brass quintet featuring the tuba. It is patterned after the popular euphonium solo, but moved to a key that is better for tuba. It would let you show off both your lyrical playing and your technique. The page below has a sheet music sample:

It was my original intent to do 4 pieces, one featuring each instrument of the quintet. I got as far as Endearing Young Charms for tuba and Blue Bells of Scotland for trombone. Still thinking about a horn feature and a trumpet feature, but so far there have been too many other things on the front burner. One of theses days...

Of course, When Yuba Plays the Rhumba on the Tuba. I have a couple of different arrangements. Provide me with an email address if you are interested.

Dave Werden's Endearing Young Charms setting is excellent.

There's a fantastic piece for quintet called Doggerel Machine by the British composer John White. The piece is built out of many smaller movements, and there are two solo movements (a 2.5 minute one for tuba alone, and a somewhat shorter movement for solo trombone). It's a great little piece, and has substantial parts for all players involved. It might be a little hard to get a hold of, but it should be out there somewhere.

If you'd like an easier piece you could do "Do not reject me in my old age" by Chesnokov. It focuses on pedals; ranges from Pedal Bb to Middle C, I think.
So, if you have particularly beautiful pedals, this is a great piece!

Try Exhibiton by Fisher Tull. It has movements featuring each instrument. It's not easy, but is a lot of fun to play.

Here's a valiant effort by a young quintet:

Andre Previns' "Four Outings"for brass quintet. I heard it at a concert last week and it has a phenomenal tuba line.

Konsertant Svit by Christer Danielsson. Originally for 4 horns and tuba, but it works great with the traditional quintet setting provided with the music. A great recording is on Tim Buzbee's "Buzzed" album. Have fun!
