I agree on the Gregson, but also check out the Nelhybel Suite for tuba, its in 5 mvts and can take up a decent chunk of time and it isn't technically above most high school students, especially if they are good enough to prepare a recital, plus the Nelhybel can be done on any tuba. Could also take a look at the hartley suite for unaccompanied tuba, even though I loathe that piece
and if they are good enough even the Vaughan-Williams or Hindemith.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, too. And I wouldn't want to hear what would come after it--it won't fill 20 minutes but just thinking about it destroys my chops.TonyTuba wrote:Gregson in 6 weeks for a high school student...i wouldnt want to hear that
But I don't have any good suggestions. 20 minutes is a very long time to fill with solo tuba music. If he wants to give a recital, he needs more time to prepare.

Gregson hangs in the high register quite a bit -- especially for a younger player such as high school. I'd be wary of attempting this.TexTuba wrote:...How about the Gregson? It could be done in roughly 20...
One thing to consider -- Mozart Horn Conerto No. 3. Sits pretty well for tuba, won't kill the face, student has the chance to make some music, and times at around 15+ minutes (not including time between mvts).
Just tossing this out for consideration.

I can't stand the Haddad, but it will work. From the Wekselblatt solo book, the Waltz for Mippy will kill 2 minutes. The Marcello Suite in F, and there is another one in G I think, both published by Southern and arr. by Don Little. Walter Hartley Suite for Unaccompanied tuba works, and several of the Persichetti Serenade are doable. The Hindemith Sonata is good range wise if the kid is fast a picking up rhythms. Don't forget Beelzebub by Catozzi.

20 Minutes
The Strauss Horn concerto 1 in Eflat will take up about 5 minutes and there is a tuba version out there. Thompson edition inc out of Rock Hill South Carolina has a Tuba edition out, just the solo though, you have to get the piano part somewhere else. Capt

Re: 20 Minutes
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't the Strauss LONGER than 5 minutes? Maybe you're playing it hella fast...capt_tuba wrote:The Strauss Horn concerto 1 in Eflat will take up about 5 minutes...
