Got a response from the seller, thinks it's Eb but not sure.

That's probably because I asked him if it was an Eb, he has no clue.

Well, looks like my first impression (which was based on the perceived length of the 1st and 2nd valve loops - they still look longer to me than EEb) was incorrect.
Dan or anyone else, I'd appreciate being "set straight," particularly looking at that second photo and the length of the 2nd valve loop that goes underneath the clockwork mechanism.

Re: Bell-Front Miraphone
I've owned several Miraphone 183's. This is actually a much smaller tuba than the 186 so with nothing in the image to compare this horn too... it's difficult to get a sense of scale. The bore of the 183 is .681" while the 186 is .770". The bells are also quite different.... about 13 1/2" as opposed to about 16 1/2".Uncle Buck wrote:Well, looks like my first impression (which was based on the perceived length of the 1st and 2nd valve loops - they still look longer to me than EEb) was incorrect.

The 'give-away' is the leadpipe being straight (like on a 186CC) before it enters the rotors. Here's a picture of one of the 183's I had which had a recording bell that I converted to an upright bell. Hence, the main slide extension.

I made that connection right away. But... couldn't resist the chance to give you some crap!the elephant wrote:TubaTinker wrote:'Face, Boobs, and Bum'C'mon - It is a tuba forum. You fail to see the connection?KiltieTuba wrote:C'mon - F double flat? I thought this was a music forum?![]()
BTW... regarding the girls in dirndls.... in about 30 minutes, I'm off to take my place at Germania Mannerchors 'Volksfest'. Plenty of brats, beer, dirndls, and German music. Runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Rhein Valley Brass will be playing in the ballroom from six to midnight.
Think I'll take one of the recently overhauled Miraphone 186 recording-bell tubas and of course... the Alphorn!

Re: Bell-Front Miraphone
Back when I was in acquisition mode I definitely would have gone for it. A bell front EEb would be a fun thing to have for certain groups. Let us know how it works out.
