1st lesson

Post by Jerryleejr »

Had my first lesson yesterday and it went surprisingly well.
I didn't blow my instructors socks off but he was surprised I hadn't played in 20+ years only had my horn for 4 days prior to the lesson as was able to make a somewhat decent sound. He said he heard and saw some good fundamentals were still intact. So that's encouraging...just means practice practice and more practice. And I really need a new set of lungs gotta get the cardio going..I dont think he liked my Olive Garden joke, he asked where I was musically and told him with a straight face, well arpeggio was an awesome salad at Olive Garden when topped with staccato cheese...

Wait, so you just bought a new tuba AND already had a lesson? Pssh, what an overachiever. :)

Congrats on the new tuba, nothing quite like the feeling of getting back into playing.

Well I contemplated staring at it, but ironically it wouldn't play itself and I vaguely remember something about a mouthpiece and pushing buttons, so I figured I needed an expert. Although my wife cracked the code music scholars have been fighting for years. When the kids asked what do you do with a tuba, she said "you blowa da mouthpiece and pusha de buttons" so that's all I've heard from them for a week lol...

When my dad passed away his dog (Bobo - literally the name he came with from the shelter) came to live with me. The first time I picked up a tuba and started playing he was transfixed. It took him 5 minutes to figure out that pushing the buttons down caused the sound to change and he got on his hind legs and started mashing the buttons down while I played. My first thought was this is great - we can work up a novelty skit for a concert - then it occurred to me that if he starts buzzing he might sound and play better than I do!

He loves tuba playing and all 90 pounds of him lays on my feet when I rehearse. I suspect his first owner (who had to go into a nursing home and give up the dog) may have been a tuba player and hence his love of tuba playing and his name. Good luck with your new horn!

That may have explained the trumpet fiasco...

It actually calms my dog down during thunderstorms for me to sit down and play some low long tones.
