ON HOLD - Meinl Weston 32 5-valve CC $4500 OBO

Post by smyoung »

Here is my Meinl Weston 32 CC. Stamped "W. MEINL WESTON A DIVISION OF GETZEN" on the bell, this German-made, 4/4-size, 5-rotor valve tuba is in great working condition and would be especially appropriate for either the advanced high school and/or college student looking for a do-it-all horn or the professional looking specifically for a tuba with the characteristics of a medium-sized German rotor CC. I am the second owner; the first owner bought it from a dealer where it was a showroom "demo" model. If I had to guess, I would say it is from the mid/late '80s. Height: 39"(99cm). Bell diameter: 17.5"(44.5cm). Mini-ball-type linkage. I am selling it because I no longer use it as my main tuba and cannot afford to keep it otherwise.

Asking $4500 OBO. Horn is located in Eugene, Oregon. I'm willing to drive to deliver or let you try it out (my schedule permitting). Will also ship via Greyhound for a week trial or final sale. PM me and we can figure something out. Will also send more pics upon request.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
- All valves and slides move freely. Nothing "sticks"
- Configurable 5th valve slides allow the player to lower pitch either a whole step or a major third. For me, once I decide which configuration I liked best, I went with it and hardly ever used the other.
- The 5th valve as a flat whole step works pretty well as a "BBb" valve, allowing you to hold it down and play as you would a BBb tuba. This helps in the transition from playing BBb tubas to this CC tuba.
- With this using rotary valves, water collects at just ONE water key. This is nice compared to having to pull several slides out and/or flip the tuba upside down as with most piston tubas.
- Good intonation. It doesn't fight you for the right pitch, and little to no 1st slide pulling is necessary.
- Has strap rings for use standing/marching.
- There is a dent on the bottom bow where it rests on your lap, and a few smaller dents around the bottom as well, but they do not affect playing quality.
- There are a few areas where the lacquer is worn, scratched, and otherwise imperfect, but nothing major stands out visually.

Thank you for looking! PLEASE PM WITH ANY INQUIRIES!

- Stephen

The first tuba I ever bought was a 4-valve version of this. It was a very nice tuba, and I remember it fondly... if it would have had 5 valves, who knows, I might still own it. To me, it was kind of in-between a Miraphone 186 and 188, and the biggest difference is that it could handle a lot more "pushing" before the sound would crack. Build quality was excellent, and I found that the tuba was really just the "right size" for just about everything. The compact wrap on this tuba (like on the 186 and 188) just plain LOOKS good to me too. Very easy instrument to look at.

Ok, I have to stop, otherwise this will end up in my house, and I'll have some explaining to do.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I thougt MW had the "a division of Getzen" printed in the late 60s, and 70s.

That's a pretty horn. I hope she sells quickly.

If you like the miraphone 188 then get this as it was based off that, great horn.

Check out the built-in "caddy" for the extra 5th valve slide. This allows you to loop the 5th into a much longer valve, almost Rudy style.
There was an excellent story about a tubist who was erroneously accused of being out of tune. He moved that slide at the conductor's insistence. Perhaps someone can relate the story better. (That is reason alone to buy this tuba.)
