Stolen traveler F tuba

Post by johngray »

Silver traveler F tuba stolen in Brooklyn this week.
BTW a traveler tuba is about euphonium sized tuba.
"Mack" logo on bell.
FYI. for buyers.
Will offer reward if someone runs across "seller".

Serial # ?

Characteristic wear or blemishes?

Stickers?

May be helpful in ID- your instrument.

I have had the opportunity to play John's horn. The horn is in near mint condition, although there is a pinhole leak between the first rotor valve & knuckle. It will create a noticeable bubbling. Please help find John's Mighty Midget!

Just for terminology:

Isn't the Mighty Midget the BBb Tornister tuba from Wessex?

Possibly, Klaus... If so, I stand corrected. The horn in question is definitely an F. Satin silver, with I believe the bold accent options.

Hi-
You may want to alert the Vice Squad Department of your local police dept. in your area. A little known fact -- most associate the Vice detail to drugs, prostitution, etc., but most police forces in cities have a small unit in Vice that works on checking area pawn shops for stolen items. If your horn was stolen and IF it was 'pawned,' the Vice unit may be able to get it back for you. Just a thought ...best of luck ....

The horn that was stolen is a travel tuba in the Key of F. The finish is satin silver with gold trim. There are only about 5 of these with this finish in the US, I hope we have a good ending to this.

Astonishingly precise description from a mass marketer not specializing in brass instruments.

What I intended to imply with the above posting was a suspicion that the thief is a tubist, who either has met with the original owner at a single occasion or even may be from his closer environment. Not a nice thought.

Interestingly enough, there are already 7 bids.
If Tom's post is right (about the # of these out there with the MACK logo), then I have to wonder if the others in the US can be accounted for by the other buyers.

Edit - I've sent an e-mail to the OP about this thread and the new e-bay listing. Hopefully we hear back in the next few days about this one.

Edit 2 - removed link(s)

I wanted to asked the seller, whether the ownership history could be documented, but his eBay site is set up to NOT taking questions.

Maybe he should contact ebay directly and give the seller less opportunity to deep six it?

eBay only allows law enforcement persons and PROACT members to report stolen property.

Somebody able to contact the original owner here and now, so that the time factor isn't working against his interests?

I have contacted John about the horn and he has contacted the detective working on the case. Hopefully we have a good ending on this.

This is John.
Thanks, guys.
NYPD is on this. Got address/phone/etc. of ebay seller.
The detective--who seems pretty experienced at this stuff--God the NYPD is good--he said to stay low and quiet.
From the other postings on ebay looks like this is a stolen good outfit and they want to put the hurt on him.
Will update shortly.

Thanks again, fellas!

Klaus,

FYI, it's not someone I know. I live in a pretty rough area in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Some guy climbed in from the roof on an adjacent building. Not sophisticated.

If so, and I trust you, then the fence/distributor has a pretty well organized sales operation with good documentation. I certainly hope the police will take this scammer apart.
