Tuba/Euph master class

Post by jagerboy »

I've been booked by a local concert band to examine their tuba and euphonium players, and give an hour long "master class" afterward. While I've done plenty of examining and teaching, this will be my first master class and I'm a little unsure of how to approach it. I'm sure there's loads of folks here that do master classes regularly, and I'd love to ask some advice.
I'm thinking of coming up with a few general ideas (warm up, excercises etc.), and then have the whole group play one of the easier exam pieces of the day. If there are any common issues throughout the day I'll address them too of course, but as much as I try stretch this out, I can't see it lasting a whole hour.
I'd love to bring along some ensemble pieces to play, but because of the range of standards I'll be examining, I can't think of anything that would suit the whole bunch.

Any suggestions?

Bring some printed materials: exercises you like to do, tips to remember, not necessarily a full outline, but what you want them to remember after it's done. Include a list of resources you like to use so they can look for them to later.

Don't just listen to yourself talk for an hour. Find a way to keep everyone involved and participating. Younger players need more of this. I applaud educators who are really good at keeping youngsters attentive.

Warm-ups and exercises - do different things out of the norm, not just the normal stuff everyone's already doing. Example: Clarke technical Studies for Cornet, ex 1-3. Not enough low brass players do these IMHO.

Good luck!
