How would you repair the W. Jacobs' Arban's book

Post by pjdicris »

This book was included in the big stack of music I got when I bought my 188. yadda yadda the coil was already starting to come out when I got it, and I eventually took the coil out. I put some of those loose binder rings in the resulting holes, but some pages ripped out, leading me to take them out, and now having this stack of papers in my locker

Now I'm trying to figure out how to fix it. I'm considering duct taping the spine/cover and possibly using a thin piece of cardboard and/or superglue to supplement the spine. Is that how you would do it? How have you delt with a similar situation? Would the book lay flat (enough)? I don't really want to buy this book that I already have. so how would you do it?

Yes, I also have the trumpet one and can read TC, but I want to repair this book regardless.

Thanks! :tuba:

I would just take it to Kinkos and ask how many ways they could help me put a new binding on it. Then choose based on cost.
Depending on what they say, Duct tape may still be an option (since WD-40 won't help).

A competent and experienced librarian will be able to give you advise, or rebind for free if you bring cookies. Don't look for one of those media specialists -- we're talking old school shushing type with too much hairspray and not enough makeup.

One of my pals has had a print shop in the family for the last 60 years. A "real" print shop has a cutter and a hole punch. Not sure of the room on the Jacobs book but they would clamp the book into the cutter press and cut off all the doodads from the wire binding and then drill (a print shop term meaning punch holes) for a three ring binder. Depending on the amount of room on the pages, you may or may not cut off some on the binding edge of the page. You may want to delete the cutting step if leaving it ragged would give more room for holes. The cut would be made in one shot as will the holes.

A lot of the old time shops were shuttered when the business went all electronic in the copy layout room and the press room but the steps and techniques used to assemble the pages into a book are all the same- old school or electronic.

You're right.... That would be the easiest... I guess I'm used to using my buddies. This sort of thing takes them about ten minutes and they will do it for a dozen doughnuts.

That's what I'll end up doing if the repair job doesn't work. Just want to try to offset that.

Thank you everyone else for your sugestions. I was thinking about rebinding but with the larger coil (the three or four notch ones). I think that could work.
