Lacquer Corrosion

Post by Zaphod Beeblebrox »

Hey everyone,
I recently got a used Melton (Meinl-Weston) 32, and it plays great. I like it a lot. The thing is basically a Miraphone 188. Anyhoo, there's a considerable amount of corrosion on the finish (I am fairly certain that it isn't red rot) along the top outside area of the bell. Any suggestions on how to get it out? Buffing, polishing, relacquering? Thanks.

Purely cosmetic, though - it isn't going to rot appreciably if not attended to - true?

As I said, I don't think it is red rot because I thought red rot is the brass rotting from the inside out. You can't see this corrosion from inside of the bell; it's purely external.

Also, how much would a re-lacquer of just the bell cost?

Leave it be. It's too much of a pain in the butt to refinish.
