What do you think the problem with the slides? I'm wondering about the person who listed the auction. They have no ebay history.

A lurker with only one post who joined this forum just today? I suspect that you are correct this time Ian. But... don't let it go to your head!

I reached the poster on here via ebay. Hopefully we'll take a look at it in person before the auction ends. I'm leery about buying things that large sight unseen!

My guess is the slides are stiff/frozen from lack or use or an improper lubricant that has dried out.
Looks to be in overall good condition.

We'll see what it sounds like on Wednesday. And then it will be what it goes for at the auction...

That looks bigger than the 186 we all know and love. Baltimore Brass had a 190 some time ago which it took all my willpower to not buy, and this looks similar.
Principal tuba, Bel Air Community Band
Old (early 1900s?) Alexander BBb proto-163
1976 Sonora (B&S 101) 4-rotor BBb
1964 Conn 20J/21J BBb (one body, both bells)
1970s Marzan Slant-rotor BBb

I think the 190 has as a vertical tuning slide.

Here is the info on a modern day 5 value 186 BBb http://www.wwbw.com/Miraphone-S186-Stan ... 91953.wwbw" target="_blank It has a 17.7" bell. I'm going to look at it with my son tomorrow. He plays a 4 valve Miraphone at school and I've been trying to find one we can afford for home.

It's been a while, so I don't remember if the MTS on that one was vertical or horizontal. But whoever bought that horn got an excellent deal.

Miraphone's current BBb horn with 42cm bell is the 282, but that one also has a vertical MTS.

The serial # on the bell of 11158 places manufacture date in early 1978. I'm not sure what model it is.

Sorry, ma'am. :D

And yes, I'd love to know. I'm always glad when someone gets a good deal, even if it isn't me! And you're a pretty cool mom for hunting this down for your son. :tuba:

$**** + the Arban tuba book. The seller is a band teacher who was selling his college tuba. It is making a bit of rattling noises. We oiled and lubricated it. It is missing a thumb ring. The seller was happy to not have to ship it and to have it go to a kid who was gong to play it rather then a dealer who was going to re-sell it. Perhaps it helped that he was wearing a John Philip Sousa Honors band t-shirt :)

Thank you all for your advice and support! I have been looking to purchase a Miraphone for my son since we helped repair the school Miraphone this year. I hope I'm a good tuba mom :)

Congratulations, that sounds like a great deal. As someone whose parents helped me scout the want-ads to buy a horn in high school, I think you're a great tuba mom!

It will now be played by a kid who appreciates a good tuba and is a good musician, rather then dealer who would have gotten a bargain because the seller had no ratings on ebay. My son loves it, oiled it last night and named it. :tuba:
