Neat picture in the Atlanta Journal today. Can anyone identify those tubas? Anyone know any history?

I believe I remember a tubeneter that posted about being in this group but I can't find the post. I was hoping he would chime in. All the article said was that both of the tubas were Eb's and that one had been restored from yard art. I would assume that would be the top action. The saxhorn looking one is maybe period but I can't believe the top action is. If it weren't for the wool uniforms I think I might like to find a group like this.

They own three Eb side-valve contrabass saxhorns, a Boston, a Quinby & Hall, and a nickel-silver Lehnert. I can't see it clearly, but I believe it's the Boston. The silver one next to it is a early 20th century Pan American Eb.

There's a Wurlitzer top valve Eb in the 14th and 15th pictures in the article.

None of these is a yard-art instrument. The band does have an 1840 bass drum that was temporarily a coffee table, though. Lee Stofer worked on these horns for us a couple of years back; he loves antique instrument repair and restoration, and those horns definitely benefited from his expertise.

The uniforms are not as bad as they seem. The band has learned over the years to make extra allowances in hot weather.

I was in the group for 9 years but decided to retire from it earlier this year. It's a group of excellent musicians and great people who aren't there for political statements; it exists for the love of 19th century music.

ASTuba apprenticed with Lee Stofer when Lee was still in Georgia, so the hair colour could have been right.

Asked himself and he found the resemblance eerie, but it isn't ASTuba.
