Movies and musicals with tuba solos

Post by michael_glenn »

Pretty straightforward. What is your favorite tuba solo in any movie/musical?
It's pretty simple, but I love the tuba solo played in The Importance of Being Earnest. Too bad the actor didn't know anything about tuba, so the fingers weren't realistic at all.

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

No major solos per se, but I'm presently playing the Bass Trombone/Tuba book for a production of "Mary Poppins". Nothing super difficult, but it's got a lot of great parts. It'll be bittersweet to close the show tomorrow afternoon.

Sleepless in Seattle, "Just A Wink And A Smile", I believe played by Jim Self.

Star Wars IV: A New Hope, the Jawa sandcrawler scene, tuba solo by John Fletcher on a CC Holton 345.

The Jawa/Sandcrawler theme from Star Wars.
The Jabba the Hutt incidental music from Return of the Jedi.

Fletch really nailed it. :tuba:

Floyd Cooley is just as good on the "John Williams Conducts John Williams: The Star Wars Trilogy" album.

I still like the Solo in the Robin Williams "Hook" during the Food Scene. Sorry no link, but it was still a good lick.

The opening of the second act of the musical 'Barnum' starts out with fun sousaphone solo. Fun when you do it right....

As a child, listening to the recording of "With a Little Bit 'o Luck" from My Fair Lady was a great influence on my desire to play tuba.

Steptoe and Son 1972 full movie: http://youtu.be/-fWVpJNkvf8" target="_blank

Theme music of this movie starts with a very satirical tuba solo as a parking enforcement officer is walking her beat.
Much better than Stewies solo in family guy.
Sandford and son was the US version of these characters.
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

the composer on this documentary wrote me a really nice long lyrical solo. It played in theaters and on PBS too. called "Herb and Dorothy" Solo is after about 43 minutes; cat scene.

----->BUT... Here's a major one of mention: Chris Hall on Saving Private Ryan
He's got an orchestral brass section soloistic line in the first track that's just totally outstanding. Chills every time I hear it! Track 1, "Hymn to the Fallen" Chorale starts at 1:45, big tuba line is about at 2:00. It's one of those moments where you hear it and think: "Yeah, that's why I play the tuba!!" Track 9, "The Last Battle" starts with a tuba solo as well.
There is really prominent really great tuba playing all through the soundtrack. One of my favorites.

My 18 year old twins asked to watch Hook tonight in memory of Robin Williams and there is a great tuba solo during the imaginary dinner scene.

"The Band Concert", the first Mickey Mouse cartoon in color, has several good on-screen moments for the tuba/euphonium (and most other band instruments).

+1 on Saving Private Ryan. Hymn to the Fallen is set for orchestra and chorus, available for public performance . I've played it twice. Lovely writing - lyric, mournful, dignified line against the rest of the orchestra with a nice Major 7th leap at the climax (c to b). Some fruitcake did a hack job for band and just omitted the whole thing. No idea why. It's in the wrong key anyway. Forewarned is forearmed.
