Recital Repertoire help

Post by MacedoniaTuba »

Hi guys,i need a advice. I am planning on making a recital in April or May. Still thinking of the repertoire. The biggest dilemma is should I play concerto(i am planning on Ralph Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto) or play two sonatas and three more short pieces. I would like to do the Concerto, but lots of professors told me not to do it since it's not usual and "right" to play concerto on recitals(i guess it's because of the concertos musical form or something else).
Thank you in advance!
Alex.

I have no opinion about whether a concerto is appropriate in a recital. (Certainly have seen it done.) But is it really advisable to do something "lots of professors" have suggested you not do? When you have equal opportunities to annoy and not annoy people who have power in your life, not annoying them is, on balance, almost always wise.

In my personal opinion I would say yes, but honestly I would chuck it up to whatever your private instructor suggests. If they are happy, you'll be happy.

If it is "not usual and right" to play a concerto on a recital, then most people would never get to play a concerto ever. Play the concerto.
