Chinese-made *piston* 4/4 CC?

Post by UTSAtuba »

I've seen a couple on the market that look Hirsbrunner-esque, but those were given bad/mixed reviews. I'm just curious if there's any update on a piston 4/4 CC clone?

Thanks!

PS-I'm aware of the rise of the 410 CC, but would like info on the above-mentioned.

I know one is in the works. I know basically nothing more. If the one driving it wishes to say more, I'll leave that to him. I checked in about it a few days ago and he said it will be a while yet.

Based on what little he has told me, I doubt the price point will be much different from the Wiseman, but that's just me guessing, not actual information.

I've told a couple of importer/dealers that I would stand in line to buy a good-enough instrument similar to the HB2P, but no hands have been tipped in that direction or any other in response.

Wessex do have plans for a front piston CC (not clone), but still a while off, with some other new tubas out first*

*Including 'Excelsior', our new compensated 3+1 BBb, which I am excited to get prototype in January (will be at Butlins in UK and US Army Conference in states as first showing)

There is a 1291 clone out there currently. I wouldn't do it if I were you.

With $1,000ish, your best bet is to buy a BBb-something-or-another. You might need to relearn some fingerings, but you'll get a better horn out of it in the end.

...which cannot readily be played in tune. Jonathan is on the right track. There is a market for a *useable* (by players in the target market) Chinese 4/4 piston CC.

+1 to what talleyrand said. A HB-2P type (useable) clone would be outstanding for many. The Wisemann (PT-6P) clone looks great but, from my past experience, are hefty beasts size wise (not everyone wants a huge horn). And to cover my ***, I'm not saying the Wisemann is a bad horn. In fact, if it plays similar to a PT-6P, a horn like that would make many a tuba player happy.

To me, that defeats the point. Or at least it's a different one.

The mere fact of a tuba being made in China isn't the point. The point is the ratio of good-enough quality to low-enough price. If it made sense for me to pay that price for an instrument to take to community band and church, getting paid exactly never, there are scores of tubas that would be good choices regardless of where they were made. (And almost none of them would require me to figure out what to do with a dependent fifth valve.) I pretty much lost sight of that back in April and May and nearly dropped quite a bit more than even this. Fortunately I got my feet under me again while the money was still in my possession.

All this being said, I await the arrival in the next week or so of an American-made 4/4 piston CC that Norm Epley has been fixing up and customizing for me. So again, China isn't in itself the issue.

Oh, okay. A a bit of literalism. Gotcha. I think I'll stand by what I've said.

Hey, the man asked a question. Just not the one you answered.

Oh, okay. Whatever you say. (The OP and I have communicated by PM, so I'm pretty sure I have an idea about what his questions and priorities are. But no doubt you are sage and right.)

And, of course, there is this little bit of evidence that I might be speaking in some small way to his issue: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=64087#p530950

Current piston CC tubas made in China that are good:
---Wisemann 900---PT-6P clone--5/4
---Big Mouth Brass (BMB)--3/4 J-834, 4/4 J-845, & 6/4 J-865-- all models designed by Dick Barth

Eastman is coming out with a fantastic new 4/4 CC that was based on a cut down King 2341. Great sound and response. It should be at NAMM (the very rough first version of this horn was there last year) in Anaheim this January.
