When written, I could understand that the addition of a tuba would be a nice colour change for the choral, but with a large, modern bass trombone I don't think it adds much of anything. That said, there are two things working it it's favour: It's a good piece of music and you don't really have to count rests.

We're currently doing a concert band arrangement of the Nut Cracker. In one of the movements the Tuba holds a low G for the entire piece. No breath marks etc. Just one G tied together throughout the entire movement. Talk about a drone.

Hey, no criticism of the Bolero please. It's a great piece, if you're a budding percussionist. I call it Ravel's "Concerto for snare drum and orchestra".

When I was still a piano player, my dream was always to play Ravel's left hand concerto, and I still know it pretty much by heart. In the old days, when still practicing, I could actually have pulled off a decent amateur performance of it (not Leon Fleisher caliber), but these days it's way outside my skill chart.

Along this line, I would include Fanfare for the Common Man.

Hate the piece, but not a walk in the park. It requires attention :)

The only thing that saves Bolero is the modulations. It's a powerful feeling, to me, to suddenly hit the E...back to C isn't quite as fun.

Dvorak 9 gets my vote for being the most fabulous symphony that has an almost nothing tuba part. Far better to play a band version where the tubas play the double bass part.
