'Beautiful' depends upon the context in which sound is produced.

Brian Wolff produces the tuba sound which I admire most in one context. Gary Buttery in another. Oren Marshall in another. Dan Peck in another. Carol Jantsch in yet another.

I don't seek to and don't understand the point of emulating anyone. I'm always listening for my own beautiful sounds. I know them when I hear them.

Dennis Miller has a sound that I have never heard elsewhere - a strong fundamental coupled with tremendous overtone, essentially lyrical but always with front to the note. Many players have a great sound. A memorable sound is another thing, one that you can recall like a playback. I'm missing that with some contemporary players. Don't get me started on equipment.......

I think the "sound" for me depends on the context. For me for solo tuba it is hands down Roger Bobo. For foundation under a orchestra it is Arnold Jacobs and Warren Deck. I make my personal judgment based on artists I've heard live. I've been fortunate to hear a lot of them live and for me it is amazing how much different live in a hall is so much better for hearing/feeling tuba then even the best recordings and playback equipment. I really enjoyed the times I saw Bobo live as he owned the stage as a virtuoso and the audience did not think of him as that guy who played that tuba really well, but rather as an artist expressing himself. The Jascha Heifetz of tuba.

When I was a kid, it was Chuck Dallenbach. First, because it sounded awesome. And second, because it was the only cassette I had that I knew the tuba player. I was actually a trumpet player for the first 5 years or so of my musical life, and still just wanted to listen to Chuck. The trumpet guys were of course also top notch, but I never could (and still can't) name them. Whoops!

Also, Kevin Ladd. Not the most famous player, but an excellent player and a great sound. I was fortunate to play some concerts with him about 5-10 years ago.

More recently, I'm not sure. Who plays a large rotary CC in orchestra these days?

and he was a super nice guy who was always willing to come out and do community band concerts and share that sound with an audience many of whom would not have been able to hear it at Orchestra Hall.
